Dieng

An Adventurous Journey to Dieng

Clueless along the way, we found that the journey throughout Middle Java is quite fun. Supplies are plenty, interesting snacks and souvenirs are always within reach. And the crown jewel of the journey this time is of course the Dieng Plateau. Lush green highland, accompanied by cool breeze and fogs hanging low, this place offers a lot more than what it’s famous for, the land of the tobacco fields.

A Bumpy Start for a Bumpy Ride

Our journey didn’t actually start smoothly. The first glitch was an unexpected rain poured down during Jakarta’s afternoon rush hour. The second, more fatal, my friend has forgotten to bring the Java map, which was crucial for our trip. Eager to escape from the hustles of the metropolitan city, we moved on. The destination: the famous Dieng plateau. The motto that night was clear: Dieng or bust! Because we didn’t have a map, we decided to go along the north coast of Java to Tegal, and then head South to Dieng, assuming that Dieng is located between legal and Purwokerto.

As always, the journey between Jakarta and Cirebon was the toughest one. Badly lit roads with less than adequate roadsigns, invested by death defying truck and bus drivers, ready to ram you in full power if you slide a little bit off track! But we made it to Purwokerto at dawn, after driving straight through the night. Dieng was nowhere to be seen. When we asked for directions to Dieng right after Tegal, a gentleman we asked just laughed!

During a quick stop for breakfast and shower in Purwokerto, we realized how far off we were. Dieng is actually located further East, towards the direction of Solo, after passing Purbalingga and Wonosobo. There was never a Dieng near legal! We laughed, then moved on immediately, this time in the right direction. Actually, to do a road trip through Middle Java is quite easy and enjoyable. Due to the heavily populated areas, there’re always enough supplies on the road: gas stations, restaurants, and coffee shops. And if you’re lost, you can always ask for directions.

But, you have to be careful to the indonesian way of saying ‘No’. For the javanese especially, it is often considered impolite to say ‘No’ to a guest. That’s why they will say ‘Yes’ and try to figure out a bogus route even if they have no clue what you’re talking about. The trick to overcome this is easy: just ask 2 or 3 times for the same question. If all the answers check out, it means they really know what they’re talking about. As we say in one indonesian proverb: never be ashamed for asking questions, or else you’ll be lost!

Viagra Souvenirs

After driving for about 3 hours from Purwokerto, we reached Wonosobo around lunchtime. There we stopped for a well-deserved lunch: sate kambing (goat satay), tongseng, and gule, all typical of Wonosobo. The satay is of course well-known already. Tongseng is a kind of thick soup with cabbage and fried goat’s meat, and gule is a thinner soup with strong herbs and boiled goat’s meat - all appropriate for the cool climate.

And the taste was good! We found all the delicious meal at a small stall called ‘Pak Amat’ at JI. A. Yani. They used a young goat with a good quality, the texture of the meat was so tender and the goat smell was significantly reduced. The herb was absorbed completely into the meat creating a tempting composition of herbs and goat’s meat aroma. Yummy!

Right next to the satay stall, Voila! A souvenir shop! It was definitely our lucky day. We stormed the store for snacks to be brought home. Due to its high elevation, Dieng has several very unique products. For example, a type of papaya called Carica, available sweetened and packed in jars. This fruit, which has a taste between papaya and mango, can only be found in Dieng. Another product is the Iambi black tea, which only grows at high altitude.

Snacks typical of Dieng are assorted fried mushrooms — from button-shaped to french fries look-a-like. All deep fried, ready to eat. Last but not least is a traditional medicine also unique to Dieng: the Purwaceng. This is a kind of ‘traditional Viagra’, said to have a profound effect and very safe because it’s made entirely from natural herbs. None of us bought it - at least as far as I know!

Tobaccoland

After about 30 minutes’ drive from Wonosobo, we finally reached our destination — and this time it’s for real — the majestic Dieng plateau. The plateau itself was a lot larger than we imagined. You have to drive from place to place, located about 5 to 10 km apart. As we entered the plateau, we were amazed by the majestic landscape laid before us. Vast hilly land, with clouds hanging on the higher ground, lay endless along the way.

Almost all were covered with vegetation: potatoes, vegetables, and of course: tobacco, the primadona. I always wondered why I’ve never seen a tobacco plantation although cigarettes are very common. Here, apparently, we finally found quite a lot of them. Because of its perfect combination between landscape and climate, Dieng has became one of Indonesia’s main producer of tobacco leaves. The farmers used sprinklers to spray their crops, creating sprays of water which add more freshness to the cool (about 10 to 15oC) air. This is exactly what I’ve dreamed of - an adventure in Tobaccoland, just like the TV corn mercia I!

Dieng has a lot more to offer than landscape and climate. We visited the Telaga Warna or ‘colored lake’, located not far away from the entrance. This lake is not so large, but the water has a distinctive green color, perhaps due to some volcanic activity underneath. The area surrounding the lake consisted of a small forest with many pine trees, still decorated with fogs that often simply hang in the air, giving an eerie sight from a distance.

Another attraction that we saw was the candi Bima. Candi is a name for old Buddhist or Hindu temples inherited from thousands of years ago. There are several candi complexes in Dieng, signifying that this area has been inhabited for a very long time. They are named according to the Mahabarata wayang legend, and Bima was one of them, referring to the giant strongman of the Pandawa Lima.

The structure of the single building is quite simple, about 5 m high. But it is beatifully decorated with intricate Hindu carvings. The candis, as simple as they are, always amazes me because of its durability. From all the great buildings that we have made in our time, how many will survive the next 1000 years? Well. this one. Derched up high on the Dieng plateu, has done it — and perhaps for another 1000 years!

Vows to Return

One day to explore the whole Dieng area is hardly enough. There are more candi complexes, volcano craters, and small lakes to visit. Culturally, Dieng also has traditional ceremonies to offer - one of which is the hair cutting ceremony of the breaded people. The legend says that some of the Dieng people are born with breaded hair, which hold an important spiritual meaning for the community. But the day is getting late and we had to move on, leaving the beautiful landscape behind us. It was a trip well worth it, although we had to drive for almost 17 hours straight to reach it. But considering the majestic landscape, cool refreshing climate, ancient candis, and last but not least the tempting snacks, I’d do it again without a doubt.
